CHEETAH CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: 3 Underdogs Try to Take Down a Legend

After a disappointing performance in this summers Tour Trials (held at Thunderbowl Lanes), Ciminelli used that experience to forge a different strategy for the World Series of Bowling, and worked it to near perfection.

After dominating the first three TQR rounds to earn spots in the main events, Ciminelli parlayed his run into two telecasts (the Cheetah and the upcoming Viper Championship which airs November 15). A win in either would secure his exemption for next season, but even if he is unable to do that, his performance at the World Series has given him a huge head start toward earning an exemption through the point list.

Ciminelli is a very thoughtful, polite gentleman off the lanes, but he will let his emotions show on the lanesespecially when he is bowling well. He is young and fit and reminds a lot of us of another lefty who burst onto the scene out of the TQRs just a couple years back in Rhino Page. On this weeks show, Ciminelli will face Derek Sapp in the semifinals, and the winner of that match (which will be best-of-seven) will face the winner of the other semifinal between Duke and Weber.

DEREK SAPP

Derek Sapp is a bit of a reluctant Tour player. After a stellar collegiate career at Western Illinois (he was selected as the collegiate Bowler of the Year in 2002), Sapp was married and had two children (daughters Allison and Josie) while bowling and working at his fathers bowling center in Iowa.

In 2009, Sapp finished 8th in the Regional Players Invitational and earned an exemption for the 2009-2010 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season. Possessing a strong physical game and a mean strike ball, Sapp is capable of stringing together huge scores, like he did when he won the 2003 USBC Open Championship Doubles (with partner Sean Rash) while rolling a 300 and 857 series.

To make the final four, Sapp rolled an 804 final three games to take down Jack Jurek in seven games in the Round of 16, then blitzed Mike Wolfe 4-0 in the Round of 8 with games of 279, 289, 227 and 264.

STEVIE WEBER

The last of our three underdogs will be the first to go up against the legendary Duke in the semifinals. Weber is in his second Tour of duty as an exempt player, and is coming back after sitting out the 2008-2009 season with a stress fracture of the hip.

Weber earned his exemption through Tour Trials (making him another player who was familiar with Thunderbowl Lanes prior to the season) and bowled very well throughout the World Series of Bowling. Weber also has one of the most inspirational and touching stories of any player on Tour, having lost his brother Jimmy (a top South Region player in the 1990s) to cancer and dedicating his performance and success to his memory.

Weber likes to throw hard let the ball fly, so his match against Duke should be an interesting contrast of styles. Webers road to the final four included a notable sweep against reigning PBA Player of the Year Wes Malott.

Dont miss this Sundays telecast of the Cheetah Championship at 1pm ET!

Forum: General bowling discussion

Virtual Gravity Spare (theory)

I have never had a problem picking up any spare with an aggressively set up, hard hooking ball. I just purchase the VG and again, no problem.

My theory is this:

There is no need to have multiple balls for different shots, only different lane conditions. I know guys who have, and use every time they bowl, 5 balls. To me, that's ridiculous. I use one ball. That's it. I used to be the 5 ball guy, heck the 6 ball guy. Then after losing all of them to my ex I became a 1 ball guy. Sometimes the lane conditions were a pain but all-in-all, manageable.

The way I see it, more balls equals more variables which equals more chances for mistakes.

After bowling with one ball for as long as I have, I have learned how to throw spares with it. My AMF Whip reactive urethane is set up pretty aggressively and I have no problem hooking the hell out of it or rolling it in for a 10 pin. If the lanes are real dry, I throw around 19mph. On oily lanes, I throw around 15 or 16 mph. Regardless, it's all with one ball.

So now I have the VG and the Pro Shop guy was watching me throw it and was impressed at how I was picking up the 10's. I was throwing it around 18-19 mph. I just kinda throw the ball dead handed. No shaking hands with the pins.

Thoughts?

Forum: General bowling discussion

Bowler's Edge PBA Experience League uses PBA conditions

Mike Sherry's Sports Buzz: Bowler's Edge PBA Experience League uses PBA conditions on Monday nights at Super Bowl in Appleton

By Mike Sherry
Post-Crescent staff writer

Steve Van Domelen never knew that low bowling scores could be so much fun.

And despite some long faces and mumbling under their breath, he knows his fellow bowlers in the Bowler's Edge PBA Experience League are having just as much fun.

As the name suggests, the new league on Monday nights at Super Bowl in Appleton tests bowlers on the exact same lane patterns and conditions that the pros bowl on.

"It's a lot of fun," said Van Domelen, the league president. "Everybody comes into the league and we all know we're going to struggle and shoot the occasional 150, 160 game, but also knowing the end result is you're going to be better for it.

"There's a look of pain on each one of our faces as we struggle through the night, but I really haven't been this excited about coming to league bowling and being challenged like this in a long time."

The league, which is recognized as a Sport Bowling League by the United States Bowling Congress, evolved from bowlers wanting to test themselves beyond normal lane conditions, which combined with improvements in equipment have sent high scores soaring.

Van Domelen credits Tim Mathe, who manages the Bowler's Edge Pro Shop at Super Bowl and is sponsoring the league, with getting the league going.

"Tim did a fantastic job of creating the grass roots interest of getting this thing up and off the ground," Van Domelen said.

Van Domelen also credits Justin Stuck at Super Bowl with setting up the lane conditions each week and making sure they are within specifications.

"I think the first time Justin tried to run the pattern, it took him like four or five hours to get the oiling machine just right," Van Domelen said. "But they've done a very good job."

There are 20 bowlers in the league 16 men and four women. One of the women, Karen Ruel of Appleton, had a particularly memorable night on Oct. 19 when she rolled a 300 game.

It was the sixth 300 game for Ruel the last one coming in April of 2006 in Green Bay but doing it on PBA-style lane conditions made it more memorable.

"It was completely surreal," Ruel said. "I literally was sick to my stomach of nerves. I've never thrown a 300 where everyone in the entire league stopped to watch. I was quite nervous. Total shock. Complete shock. I still can't believe it."

To put Ruel's accomplishment into perspective, Van Domelen was told by the USBC that during the 2008-09 bowling season, only seven women in the United States were credited with 300 games in sport bowling.

Van Domelen says the reaction to the league has been positive and thinks word of mouth will help it flourish in future years.

"I think it's going to grow," Ruel added. "A lot of the higher average bowlers are looking for a challenge in their game."

Freedom man honored

Marvin Haberland of Freedom was awarded the Snowmobiler of the Year Award by the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs at their fall workshop held in Stevens Point recently.

Haberland has been an active member of the Freedom Trailblazers Snowmobile Club since 1974. For the past 25 years, Haberland has been instrumental in teaching young riders about rider safety as a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources certified snowmobile safety instructor. He has also served 10 years as treasurer of the Freedom Trailblazers.

For more information, visit the AWSC web site at http://www.awsc.org.

Buzz bits

The University of Wisconsin's football game against Michigan on Nov. 14 at Camp Randall Stadium will start at 11 a.m. and be televised by the Big Ten Network, the conference announced Sunday.

Wisconsin freshman linebacker Chris Borland was named co-Big Ten defensive player of the week after recovering two fumbles, forcing a fumble and recording four tackles in his first career start against Purdue on Saturday.

The UW-Milwaukee men's basketball team has been picked to finish fourth in the Horizon League this season, while UW-Green Bay has been picked fifth. Butler is the preseason favorite after receiving 43 of 46 votes from league head coaches, sports information directors and media members. Butler's Matt Howard is the preseason player of the year.

Four Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball teams are ranked in the top 25 in the D3hoops.com preseason poll. UW-Stevens Point is 10th, UW-Whitewater 13th, UW-Platteville 17th and UW-Oshkosh 24th. Lawrence University was among the other teams receiving votes, with eight. Washington University is ranked No. 1.

Three WIAC women's basketball teams are ranked in the top 25 in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, with UW-Whitewater at No. 8, UW-Stevens Point at No. 23 and UW-Stout at No. 25. Washington University is ranked No. 1. UW-Eau Claire and St. Norbert College received votes but didn't make the top 25.

The Buzz: Sports is a weekly feature highlighting comings, goings and happenings in the sports community.
How to deal with an early-season bowling slump

How to deal with an early-season bowling slump

By Barnie Haen
Advocate columnist

Help! I'm in an early-season slump and I can't get out!

I've had bowling seasons in which I've had slow starts, but it's always been the result of working out the various aches and pains related to doing something my body has forgotten how to do over the summer.

This year, I busted out of the gate with a 663 series on opening night, and it's been downhill ever since.

In hopes of figuring out an escape from my predicament, here are a few things I've considered. Maybe one or more of them will be of use to you, as well, if you've been struggling on league night.

I probably haven't been getting enough sleep lately, especially now that I have a new job with early morning hours. Maybe an afternoon nap on league night will help. When I'm tired, it takes more effort to keep my ball speed up. Weak legs leave me too close to the floor at delivery, meaning that my ball doesn't get out far enough over the foul line. Plus, it's harder to maintain mental command through three games.

I need to arrive at the bowling alley early on league night to throw as many practice balls as possible. It will not only get me loose, I'll also have the chance to dial in my muscle memory on all the changes I've been making to my delivery. If I make a big change, I should consider (gasp!) showing up at the lanes on a different day for a practice session or two.

I always need to remember to go back to the basics. Square my shoulders. Stand up straight to get the ball out on the lane. Keep my balance. Keep my speed up. Keep my hand behind the ball. Follow through.

I need to concentrate. After I pick up my ball and before I step up onto the approach, it seems to help when I take a second or two to visualize the perfect shot. I have a difficult time eliminating distractions from my head even for the few seconds it takes to throw my ball. I need to watch the entire shot to see if I hit my mark and how the ball reacted to where (and how) I threw it.

Finally, I need to ask my teammates for a second opinion. It doesn't matter how well versed they may be in bowling mechanics; they know whether I'm doing something different than I have before.

There. Nothing to it.

Checking the oil

I've taken tapes at both Apple Valley Lanes and the Sister Bay Bowl that reveal how much oil is on the lanes and how it's distributed.

When I get the results back from the United States Bowling Congress, I'll spend an upcoming column or two explaining how to read the graphs and suggesting ways in which you might benefit from knowing the oil pattern.

Tourney dates announced

Don't forget to save the dates for the Door County USBC Association Tournament.

Singles and doubles will be at Apple Valley Lanes on Jan. 16 and 23. The Sister Bay Bowl will host the team event on Feb. 21 and 28.

In another change from previous years, the team event will consist of three-person teams.

Sponsors are still being sought for the tournament and a rebate on entry fees is available to bowlers registering and submitting payment by a certain date.

Cuculi rolls another 300

Usually a perfect game gets top billing in my column, but Mike Cuculi has been so hot lately that we hardly blink an eye any more when he shoots a big score.

After rolling a 300 game and an association record 814 series in September, and an 803 a couple of weekends ago in the Apple Valley Lanes One Day Tournament, Cuculi started his night out last Wednesday in the Washout League with another 300, followed by a 258 second game.

Cuculi seemed well on his way to moving the series record up another notch with six strikes in the first seven frames of his final game, but the strikes turned to spares over the last few balls and he was forced to settle for a 794.

John Heimbecher's 771 (268 game) was a heck of a series to end up second, with Matt Heldmann at 718, and Torry Lake posting a 268 game.

Lake had topped the Majors the previous evening with a 719 series, sharing high-game honors at 255 with Rick Davis. Cubby Hartl's 683 took runner-up status.

Scott LaLuzerne led the Industrial with a 663 and Fred Miller topped the Senior Men with 580. Miller also crashed a big 678 (236) in the Goodtimers, where Eileen Lardinois led the women with 522 (184).

Shirley DeFere was the best of the Women's Masters with a 517 (200).

Bill Kroll's 621 snuck by Mike Schumacher's 617 in the Bay Couples, although the high game of 248 went to Brian Schram. Tina Schram shot 513, while Margie Ford rolled a 197 game.

In the Adult/Youth league, Matt LeMieux topped the men, 612 (225); Alisa Hutton the women, 488 (179); Danny Jacobe the boys, 439 (185); and Casey Hutton the girls, 461 (162).

Barnie Haen is an Advocate bowling columnist.
ANDY MORTON: Where Do Exemptions Come From? A Statistical Analysis

Before I go in depth this week, let me first say how happy I am to have the PBA on TV again for the next couple months. Secondly, my superstar toddler liked the Osku Palermaa trick shot so much he took it upon himself to try it. Before we knew it, one of our barstools was in the middle of the hallway, the pins were set up, and he was emulating quite possibly the craziest and most impressive power Ive ever seen with a 15 pound bowling ball. And to throw a picture perfect strike none-the-less? Wow. Makes you wonder if he would ever use that in a real tournament to clear the oil in the heads and middle of the lane for that matter. Anyways, my kid hasnt perfected it yet, but he continues to try and I think its great. (Check out the video of my kid attempting the shot at bottom).

Now, on to more serious discussions. In the 2003-2004 season, the PBA veered off the highway of tradition and implemented the PBA Exempt player field. This essentially created a yearlong qualifying session for the first 58 PBA exemptions for the 2004-2005 season.

With five seasons of exempt field bowling under the PBAs belt, I decided to wander into the arena of statistical analysis of the system. Let me first preface this by saying that finding the exempt players of years past and how they earned their exemptions is quite a task. One, very few of these statistics are available on the PBA website. Two, I dont have access to the PBA filing cabinet. And three, there isnt an iPhone App that does it for me. With my own personal knowledge and the help of Google, Ive been able to manually decipher the information to near perfection. And when I say near perfection, I mean that its probably not perfect.

With injury deferments and the randomness at which replacement exemptions were awarded, I would give my research a plus or minus 3% margin of error. Thats just as good as any political poll! (And please, if you see any glaring errors, let me know and Ill update my stats. I figure Ill keep a running tally from here on out for future reference.)

When I set out on this task, I really wanted to focus on a few things. First, how many players have retained exemptions for the entire five seasons? Two, how many players have retained exemptions after earning them through Tour Trials? And three, do you have a better chance of retaining an exemption if you earn it through the Regional Tour versus Tour Trials?

In total, 348 exemptions have been handed out (58 each year, not including the special exemptions handed out for just the World Series of Bowling.) Of those 348 exemptions, only 121 different players have earned them. Only 24 players have retained their original exemptions since the 2004 season through a victory or points. Guys like Michael Haugen Jr. and Joe Ciccone have been exempt every season, but had to go back to Tour Trials at some point over the last five seasons. So technically, 26 players have remained exempt for all five seasons. All six seasons if you include the current one.

As for surviving a year on tour after earning your spot in the exempt field through Tour Trials; its certainly not an easy task. If I hadnt done the calculation I would have assumed that very few players who qualified through Tour Trials made it to a 2nd year on tour. And I was right. Of the 41 players who earned exemptions over the last five full PBA seasons from 2004 through 2009, only nine players have retained their exemption for one additional season based on points or by winning a title. Only nine! Thats only 22% of Tour Trials qualifiers earning a 2nd season on tour. To put it in perspective, if youre bowling on a pair with three other guys, only one of those will have a full time job the next season. Ironically, of those nine guys, all of them have retained their exemptions since earning them except Billy Oatman who lost his exemption after two seasons. The list of survivors isnt a bad collection of talent either. It includes Mike Edwards, Michael Haugen Jr., Brian Kretzer, Mike Wolfe, Chris Loschetter, Bill ONeill, Todd Book, and Steve Harmon. The worst season by far for Tour Trials participants had to be the qualifiers for the 2008-2009 season. Not one of those seven retained their exemption. That was the first season where that had happened. I think its just proof that its getting harder to get into the system.

As for the Regional Tour: well, thats where the stats get more difficult to compile. By process of elimination, I was able to figure out who earned their exemption through the Regional Tours. However, I dont know from which region they earned it from. So I cant exactly compare regions, which personally, I think would be interesting. However, with that said, there have only been 28 regional exemptions handed out over the last four full seasons. The regional exemptions were not awarded in the first fully exempt season. So how do the stats stack up? Well, of the 28 exemptions handed out, nine players retained their exemptions for the following season based on points or a victory. Of those nine though, only five have retained those exemptions every season since through points or a victory. Those players include Jack Jurek, Eugene McCune, Jeff Carter, Jason Sterner, and Nathan Bohr.

This presents an interesting comparison between earning your exemption from the Regional Tour versus Tour Trials. Statistically, you have about a 10% better chance of retaining your exemption for one additional consecutive season by earning it through a Regional Tour. On the other hand, if you are one of the 22% of players who survive your first season on the exempt tour after earning your exemption through Tour Trials, youll have about a 100% chance of retaining it for at least two consecutive seasons. I knowI knowis anything really 100%? No, but odds are in your favor versus a 55% chance of retaining it for multiple seasons through the Regional Program. I mean, 88% of those guys from Tour Trials who survived one year are still exempt on Tour today!

Of course there is one player who just stands out in all of this. Brian LeClair basically earned an exemption nearly every way possible. His first exemption was awarded on points. He lost it the following year by finishing one spot out of the points cut. He regained it through an injury deferment. Lost it again. Regained it again through Tour Trials. Lost it again. And then regained it through the Regional program. Unfortunately, he ran out of avenues to earn it for the current season. I think the only exemption left for him to earn would be the Golden Parachute exemption. Let the application process begin for 2010!

Other stats that might be compelling include the fact that 2 of the 3 players who won a title from the Tour Qualifying Rounds are still exempt on Tour. That list includes the original dream maker Sean Rash and Rhino Page. Mike Mineman lost his exemption in his first full exempt season. Of course, Jason Belmonte will try to make it 3 out of 4 by surviving his first full season as an exempt player. And Kelly Kulick is the only female exempt player in Tour history, but I think everyone already knew that.

Ok, so all stats aside, was the exemption route the right route for the PBA? In my own personal opinion, there is no doubt that it has been the right decision. Considering all things, including the financial situation of the PBA at that time, controlling prize funds and payouts became increasingly important as well as controlling the talent level of the main player field. Just because Im a scratch golfer doesnt mean that I should be able to pay an entry fee and play alongside Tiger Woods. And just because I have a PBA card doesnt mean I am worthy enough to cross with Norm Duke and Walter Ray. Its almost degrading to our top pros to put them alongside guys that have no business being out there. Just like the PGA, there is a proper way to earn your place on the Tour.

The place for those guys is in the TQR. The implementation of these TQRs as a way to participate in the PBA was a very smart way to maintain participation levels when competitive bowling was in decline, as well as a way to give fringe players a less expensive way to earn their way on tour. For half the price of the open field events, competitors can bowl against a lesser talented field overall and earn their way into the main events while also competing for a separate prize fund. This is a great place for local talent and amateurs to test themselves without it costing an arm and a leg.

And I think weve seen the cream of that crop from the TQRs elevate themselves onto the Tour full time. Guys like Rash, Page, Belmonte, Russell, Castillo, Van Danicker and numerous other guys who have the skill and ability to compete on Tour have rightfully earned their way on Tour either by victory or consistent success through these TQRs.

On top of that, the Regional program now offers an additional eight spots into the exempt field and Tour Trials can offer up to 10 additional exemptions. So, there are plenty of opportunities to earn your way on Tour. But you are also talking about the best players in the World so nobody should expect it to be an easy task.

By the way, the 26 guys who have been exempt every season includes

Patrick Allen

Brad Angelo

Chris Barnes

Parker Bohn III

Joe Ciccone (Tour Trials in 2009)

Jason Couch

Tommy Delutz

Mike DeVaney

Norm Duke

Mike Edwards

Mike Fagan

Michael Haugen Jr. (Tour Trials 2006)

Steve Jaros

Tommy Jones

Doug Kent

Mika Koivuniemi

Brian Kretzer

Mike Machuga

Wes Malott

Mike Scroggins

Ryan Shafer

Robert Smith

Pete Weber

Walter Ray Williams Jr.

Danny Wiseman

Mike Wolfe

Forum: General bowling discussion

Back in three

Hello all. Well......after making it thru a 5-bypass heart surgery, being released from the hospital only 3 days after the procedure, rehabbing as instructed, and making major changes in my diet, excersize habits, and outlook on this wonderful life, my heart doc has given me a mere 3 more weeks on the bench, and then it's back on the lanes. I'm sure, as bowlers, all of us here on the board know what an elusive thing 'timing' can be. And it can even be a more elusive thing, the older one gets. Hopefully, with a little luck, and some help from 'above', I won't have to completely retrain my feet and swing.

Wish me luck, all. Hopefully I can survive the PRACTICE SESSIONS!!!!!

Forum: General bowling discussion

Hello everyone! While I am new to this site (thanks websurferdude), I have been around on many a message board. I look forward to some interesting and informative discussion on this site.

As the subject suggests, I am from the Metro Detroit area and thus part of the MDUSBC. Since I am new, I was wondering how many other contributors are from the area?

Also, how many of you attend the Association annual meeting (held in January) in an effort to get YOUR opinions heard and see how the association does business?

Forum: General bowling discussion

rules enforcement or out of line

i'm on a recreational couples league in madison, wi. League president approaches our team and said that it was against the rules to have powder on the lanes( i know this by the way). Powder was in the seating area, not on the lanes or approach area. He was not bowling us and opposing team had not complained(members of their team do the same with the powder). The powder in question was ez-slide, not talcum. Was he out of line? Felt he was a little arrogant in his approach.

Forum: General bowling discussion

The Arnie / BM Challenge

Sorry guys, I've deleted the prior posting by MONEY....we are getting way off track here, and I don't want things getting out of hand, which is where this thing is going. Let's continue to limit our discussion to bowling here...not personal vendetta's. Arnie has his strong beliefs. Bowlymania has his. I think it's best to just agree to disagree, and finally move on. If anyone wants to challege someone else, I suggest exchange emails, and discuss it privately.

Forum: General bowling discussion

craziest thing I've heard at a bowling alley...

In the league on Monday, there's a guy who aveages 220+, was having a very rough day on the lanes. He is a large, strong as an ox type of a guy. Apparently, he was stuggling on a 130 pace the final game. In the 10th frame, frustration set in, and he bowled the ball with the intention of whipping it out to the masking units. He heaved the ball about 50' down the lane, the ball bounced up from the lane, into the masking unit, the masking unit became dislodged, and fell forward onto the lane itself causing a delay in the final frame. And on his lane, lane #21, there is a huge dent in the wood of the lane itself down there.

I've never heard of anything like this happening. I hope they can get the lane fixed. If I were the owner, I would kick the guy out.

Forum: General bowling discussion

I found these on a newspaper archive website. Interesting that Dave was considered a "phenom" when he was just a teenager!

Forum: General bowling discussion
